Four years after the popular HBO series Sex and the City ceased production, devoted fans are lining up for a chance to see their favorite foursome one more time. Tickets for the New York premiere on May 27 sold for as much as $2,100 for four coveted seats.
The movie opens in theaters on Friday May 30 after a month of promotional appearances by the cast, including a May 1 visit to the Oprah show.
Sarah Jessica Parker, (Carrie) Cynthia Nixon, (Miranda) Kim Cattrall (Samantha) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte) hit the big screen with Chris Noth as Big, David Eigenberg as Steve and Evan Handler as Harry. “Dreamgirls” Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson also joins the cast as Carrie’s assistant.
Parker, both producer and star, says getting the movie version of the long-running HBO series was nothing short of miraculous. “This is the movie that Michael Patrick (King, the film’s screenwriter and director) and I hoped for, fought for, dreamed of, battled for, doggedly pursued.”
After HBO passed on the chance to make the movie, Parker says the struggle to find a studio began. She credits the fans with convincing New Line to take it on.
“To make a movie about four women over 40 is really not the way that Hollywood likes to spend their money. It’s really the commitment and the energy of the audience, through DVD’s and syndication,” she says. “Had they not have been so devout, we could not have convinced a studio.”
New Line will soon have the verdict on whether their decision was a good one, but all indications leading up to the movie’s opening indicate a favorable box office showing.
